Learn what makes these animals special
Everybody needs a companion, and this is particularly true as we get older. While it would be nice to keep the same friends forever, unfortunately that doesn’t always work out. Because people move or pass away, it can be easy for seniors to become isolated, which is potentially dangerous.
Fortunately, even if friends of the human persuasion aren’t readily available, there are many animals that can be a great substitute. Pets can do wonders for the wellbeing of everyone, and perhaps especially for seniors in need of companionship. But which ones are best? If you are looking for a new pal for yourself or a loved one, here are some things to think about:
Cats are perfect for both homebodies and jetsetters
Because cats mostly take care of themselves, they are great, low-maintenance pets. They’re wonderful for people who like staying in and having a fluffy friend in their lap while they read or watch TV. And because they’re so self-reliant, cats are also ideal for seniors who do a lot of traveling, those who are out of the house often, or individuals who stay at home but have limited mobility. In addition, it’s theorized that cat purrs have healing power for their humans!
Dogs are great for staying active
Dogs can be good couch buddies, but they can also keep seniors active. Because they require walks, their owners have to get out and get moving. This has two benefits. In addition to regular exercise – even if it’s just for a little while each day – walks can help seniors be more social with their neighbors and anyone else they may meet. There are several breeds that are particularly good for older folks, such as Maltese, poodles, pugs, and French bulldogs. These breeds tend to require less strenuous activity to keep them fit and happy, making them perfect for seniors who need to provide (and need themselves) a little activity, but not too much.
Another perfect breed that may surprise you: greyhounds. Though these dogs are bred to race, they only require short bursts of exercise and are otherwise content to lay around like a lapdog. In addition, greyhounds tend to have a very gentle, loving temperament.
Birds are best for teachers and talkers
Birds are a superb choice for people who live alone. Because they can be taught to whistle or talk, this will add some welcome noise to a home and even supply a debate partner. And aside from a cage, birds don’t take up a lot of room. Cockatiels and parakeets are known for making great pets.
Fish are terrific stress-busters
Fish may not be the most exciting pets, but they are great for peace and serenity. Every wonder why so many dentist offices have big aquariums in their waiting rooms? It’s because watching fish swim around is relaxing. Plus, with fish, there is even less maintenance involved than with cats. Goldfish are a great option because they can live up to 10 years.
No matter the animal, pets can really brighten the day of a senior, whether they have an active social life or not. We hope this list will give you some guidance in picking the right one.
