September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, an important time to encourage men to learn more about prostate health, understand their individual risk factors, and talk with their healthcare providers about screening.
For older adults and their families throughout South Florida, staying informed and proactive about health is an important part of aging well.
Understanding Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder and is part of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells begin growing in the prostate.
Some prostate cancers grow very slowly and may require little or no immediate treatment, while others can be more aggressive. Because prostate cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages, conversations about risk and screening are especially important.
Who Is at Greater Risk?
Several factors may increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer, including:
- Age: Risk increases as men get older, particularly after age 50.
- Family history: Men with a father or brother who has had prostate cancer may face increased risk.
- Race: Black men in the United States have higher rates of prostate cancer and prostate cancer deaths.
- Genetics: Certain inherited genetic changes may increase risk.
Understanding personal and family medical history can help men have more informed conversations with their healthcare providers.
Recognizing Possible Symptoms
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include difficulty urinating, a weak urine stream, frequent urination—especially at night—blood in the urine or semen, or persistent discomfort in the back, hips, or pelvis.
Many noncancerous conditions can cause similar symptoms. Any new or persistent change should be discussed with a healthcare professional rather than assumed to be cancer.
Should You Be Screened?
The PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test is commonly used to help screen for prostate cancer. However, an elevated PSA does not necessarily mean cancer is present, and screening has both potential benefits and drawbacks.
Men should talk with their healthcare providers about whether screening is appropriate based on their age, overall health, family history, race, and individual risk factors.
A good question to ask at your next doctor’s appointment is: “Based on my personal risk factors, should I be screened for prostate cancer?”
Supporting Healthy Aging at Home
For many South Florida seniors, maintaining independence at home is an important priority. When an older adult is undergoing cancer treatment or experiencing other health challenges, additional assistance can make everyday life more manageable.
FirstLantic Healthcare provides home care services designed to support seniors and their families throughout South Florida. Depending on an individual’s needs, assistance may include personal care, companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation, and help with everyday activities.
Our goal is to help clients remain as safe, comfortable, and independent as possible while giving families additional support and peace of mind.
Make Prostate Health a Priority
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a valuable reminder that taking care of your health shouldn’t wait until symptoms appear. Encourage the men in your life to schedule regular medical appointments, understand their risk factors, and talk with their healthcare providers about prostate cancer screening.
